Trump's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
