Prime Small Screen Picks: Seven Essential Movies This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's unflinching satire addresses the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the feared consequences of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a masterful acting turn as Elisabeth, a mature film star reduced to presenting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying treatment called this experimental method. This generates a younger clone called Sue, culminating in an increasingly toxic connection between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit thriller features Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a hiatus from writing about international wars to join an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, plus additional filthy rich guests. Yet once a mysterious woman falls into the sea during the evening and everyone insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity take over. Out now, the Netflix platform

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills in this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of the phantom. After a clan including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this self-referential adventure. He plays an egotistical Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the alleged criminal, his unique performing skills comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has rendered the local kids frightened. Once Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a cellar, he fears the worst. However, the old telephone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers giving advice, while the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, late evening, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top true story about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who declares initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals begin monetising the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, bad makeup and bad faith, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to discover a mole inside the organization from five suspects – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are masters of understated style, leading to a delightful mind game of deception or honesty unfolds. Additional actors join in the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
