The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Backup Options
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
