Colombian Leader Declares 'I Will Return to Arms Again' if United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have escalated the tone of their war of words, further raising strains in their relations following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates narcotics facilities and processing labs and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions and Accusations

Talking to the press over the weekend, the American leader suggested analogous military action against Bogotá, asserting the nation is “very sick too” and governed by a sick man who enjoys creating narcotics and distributing it to America."

Although Colombia stands as the leading producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, the nation's current leader, is personally involved in the trade.

A Deteriorating Relationship

This nation has long been a staunch collaborator of Washington in the fight against drug trafficking and received cross-party backing from American politicians, yet ties have soured markedly following Trump came to office.

Its illicit drug economy is predominantly run by criminal organizations including one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters disbanded subsequent to a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Firm Rebuttal

When asked if armed intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am neither illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he stated.

"He comments without information. Stop slandering me," he expressed online.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will transform into numerous insurgents across the countryside. If they capture the president, whom a significant portion of the population admires and supports, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the populace," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man belonging of the leftist M-19 armed organization though it is believed he did not participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s and later became a prominent senator. He was mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the nation's highest office.

"I swore to never again hold a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume the fight," he said.

Reinforced Protection along with Broad Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that the president’s security detail was strengthened.

A segment of Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, yet figures spanning the political spectrum have rejected the possibility of American military action against their nation.

Political and Economic Strains

Washington withdrew his travel authorization after he encouraged American soldiers to ignore orders that violate law. Later, in October, the US enacted asset freezes on Petro, his spouse and a number of close collaborators.

At the same time as the US increased its military presence in the region and targeting alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces executed attacks on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
