A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

However the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on Monday would prevent public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting space.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
